Off Grid: Laser-based TelCo-Fiction

Vor zwei Wochen hatte ich Will Gowlands GPS-Glitchart-Projekt Here Be Dragons gebloggt, jetzt habe ich in seinem Portfolio die mindestens genauso großartige Arbeit Off Grid gefunden. A 1:1 interactive prototype for a decentralised laser communications system.Data stored on micro SD cards is sent between each transceiver node over the laser beams using pulse width modulation. Automatic re-routing occurs when a beam is broken.“

Vimeo Direktgrid

Grandiose Design Fiction vom Feinsten.

Holding a 90% monopoly on telecommunications in Mexico, Carlos Slim is the world’s richest man. With little resilience and at the mercy of corporate greed, we put our faith in these aging centralised systems that are now beginning to show their cracks. […]

Borrowing from the cartels radio communication network, a laser line of sight communication system is created that is not elicit or illegal, but off grid and under the radar. The result is a decentralised communication system that is local, ad hoc and resilient. A performative urban landscape emerges that facilitates the neighbourhood relationships, communities and markets that are lost in a city of global telecommunications. The system is open source and mobile, and the communities of the city soon develop their own constellation of transceivers and mirror relays, cultures, practices and procedures. The telecommunications monopoly is evolving into a DIY city of calibration graffiti, carved and sculpted building surfaces, reflectivity, absorbance and deregulated laser light conversations.

Tahir Square Lasershow

Die Lasershow der Proteste in Kairo. Raving Society! Von Reddit:

Flew into/out of Cairo last week, and this is what it looked like from the plane. My husband has a green laser pointer for astronomy and he has always told me how dangerous it is to point these at planes and how it can blind pilots. It was blinding my window on the plane over and over, and we were pretty low in the sky, about to land. Scared the shit out of me. I guess because these are constantly moving and not directly following planes it’s not a problem for pilots, but I was seriously terrified.

Laserpointer’d Partycopter over egyptian Protests

Youtube Direktcopter, via The New Aesthetics

Vintage Lasers Unlimited

(Youtube Direktlaser)

Schicker oller Lehrfilm aus AT&Ts Archiv: Laser Unlimited.

Nine years after the invention of the laser, the technology had not only captured the imagination of the science fiction community (as shown in the first sequence in this film), it had also been put to use in a number of practical applications.

In this film we see early laser tattoo removal, barcodes on railroad cars read by laser, lasers cutting apart microcircuit boards, laser levels helping with aircraft production, and many more applications. Holograms and holographic technologies are given special focus – laser memory storage was still a few years away, and in 1969 they thought holograms were going to be much more important in the future than they are today.

Living Laser made from human Kidney-Cells and Jellyfish

They injected a human kidney cell with a loop of DNA that codes for an enhanced form of green fluorescent protein. Originally isolated from jellyfish, GFP glows green when exposed to blue light and has been invaluable as a biological beacon, tracking the path of molecules inside cells and lighting up when certain genes are expressed.

After placing the cell between two mirrors, the researchers bombarded it with pulses of blue light until it began to glow. As the green light bounced between the mirrors, certain wavelengths were preferentially amplified until they burst through the semi-transparent mirrors as laser light. Even after a few minutes of lasing, the cell was still alive and well.

Making Popcorn with Lasers

WANT! Weil die Auktion und damit die Bilder von Ebay irgendwann gelöscht werden, habe ich die Bilder mal in mein Flickr hochgeladen: Lucasfilms Cease and Desist Letter to Wicked Lasers and their Real Life Lightsaber.

Up for grabs is the original, authentic Lucasfilm Ltd. Cease & Desist letter sent to Wicked Lasers in response to their new 1W Arctic 445nm laser.

The letter is unnamed and unsigned.

The term “Danderman” is found on the footer of select pages which leads us to conclude that this document is from the desk of David Anderman himself.

Law.com describes David as the “enforcer of Lucasfilm’s worldwide intellectual property.”

While we hope that Lucasfilm reconsiders their position and merit, we are prepared to defend the rights of our customers and those of the laser industry.

LucasArts mahnt Real Life Lightsaber ab

Lawyers, even dumber than the dumbest Space Slug.

SAN FRANCISCO—(EON: Enhanced Online News)—Earlier this week, Wicked Lasers released photos and information regarding the “Pro Arctic Laser,” a product designed to resemble the famous lightsaber hilt from the Star Wars Saga. Described by Wicked Lasers as “the most dangerous laser ever created,” the product description goes on to say that “extremely dangerous is an understatement.”

Lucasfilm’s General Counsel David Anderman had this response:

“It has come to our attention that a company called Wicked Lasers is selling a highly dangerous product out of Hong Kong that is designed to look like a lightsaber from Star Wars. This product is not licensed or approved by Lucasfilm in any way. We have demanded that Wicked Lasers immediately cease and desist their infringing activities. As Wicked Lasers itself admits, this product can cause serious injury to the user and other people. We strongly discourage consumers from purchasing it.”

Real Life Lightsaber
